For six years, the club of nations that could put a privately built rocket into orbit had exactly two members: the United States and China. On the morning of July 18, a four-stage machine seven stories tall lit up over a barrier island off India's east coast and quietly made it three.

That's the altitude Vikram-1, built by Hyderabad startup Skyroot Aerospace, reached before deploying its payloads on schedule โ€” a clean insertion into low Earth orbit roughly 17 minutes after liftoff from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota (Space.com).

The rocket is named for Vikram Sarabhai, the physicist who founded India's space program. The company that built it is worth $1.1 billion and didn't exist nine years ago. That combination โ€” deep national symbolism, private-sector speed โ€” is the whole story.
