How we rank AI photo editors

Every app was checked on 7 October 2026 against its own website, pricing and app-store listings, plus independent 2025–2026 reviews. Each gets five scores out of 10, weighted into an overall score.

Ties are broken by the edit quality score. To be listed, an app has to edit your existing photos using AI tools; pure image generators are covered in a separate category. The list is open: developers can submit an app, and we review it with the same rubric.

Features are scored half by our editors and half by this published checklist, ticked only where the app's own pages or app-store listing confirm it:

  • Remove unwanted objects or people
  • Background removal or replacement
  • AI subject or sky selection and masking
  • Generative fill or expand
  • Edit by describing changes in text
  • AI enhance, denoise or upscale
  • AI portrait and face retouching
  • Free version with useful editing tools
  • Available on both mobile and desktop or web

Rankings are editorial. Companies can't pay to change a score or a position, and any paid placement is labelled Featured.

Quick answers

What is the best AI photo editor?

In our October 2026 tests, Google Photos scored highest overall (8.4/10), with Adobe Lightroom (8.3) and Canva (8.2) close behind. Google Photos is best for quick free fixes by describing the edit, Lightroom for photographers, and Photoshop (8.1) for complex retouching and composites.

What is the best free AI photo editor?

Google Photos is free and lets you describe edits by text or voice, though the newest AI tools vary by country and device. Snapseed is completely free for manual editing, and Canva and the Lightroom mobile app have useful free tiers.

Which AI photo editor doesn't need a subscription?

Luminar Neo sells one-time licences, although AI tool access in each licence lasts a year unless renewed. Photomator offers a lifetime purchase on Apple devices, and Snapseed and Google Photos' editor are free.

What is the best AI app for product photos?

Photoroom is built for online sellers, with fast background removal, AI backgrounds and batch editing sized for marketplaces. Canva and Picsart also remove backgrounds but are broader design tools.

Do companies pay to be on this list?

No. Rankings come from the published rubric and can't be bought. Developers can pay for a Featured spot above the ranking; it's always marked Sponsored and never changes scores or positions.
