How we rank AI design tools

Every tool was checked on 7 October 2026 against its own website, pricing and app-store listings, plus independent 2026 reviews where they exist. Each gets five scores out of 10, weighted into an overall score.

Ties are broken by the design quality score. To be listed, a tool has to use AI to create or edit UI designs or graphics that you can keep editing, and anyone has to be able to sign up. The list is open: developers can submit an app, and we review it with the same rubric.

Features are scored half by our editors and half by this published checklist, ticked only where the app's own pages or app-store listing confirm it:

  • Generates app or web screens from a text prompt
  • Turns screenshots or sketches into editable designs
  • AI image generation inside the editor
  • Exports designs to code (e.g. HTML, React)
  • Exports to or works inside Figma
  • Brand kit with saved colours, fonts and logos
  • Real-time collaboration
  • Mobile app for creating and editing
  • Free plan includes AI features

Rankings are editorial. Companies can't pay to change a score or a position, and any paid placement is labelled Featured.

Quick answers

What is the best AI design tool?

In our October 2026 comparison, Canva scored highest overall thanks to easy AI tools, a huge template library and apps on every platform. Google Stitch came second as the best free tool for UI design, with Adobe Express and Figma close behind.

What is the best AI tool for UI and app design?

Figma is the strongest choice for professional teams, with Figma Make turning prompts into editable layouts and prototypes on paid plans. Google Stitch is the best free option: it turns prompts and sketches into screens and exports to Figma and code. Visily and Uizard suit non-designers who want quick wireframes.

Is there a free AI design tool?

Google Stitch is completely free in Google Labs, with monthly generation limits. Canva, Figma, Visily, Kittl and Relume all have free plans with smaller AI allowances, and Penpot is free and open source.

Can AI design tools export to code?

Yes. Google Stitch exports HTML/CSS, Tailwind and several frameworks, Relume exports React, and Uizard and Visily offer code export on paid plans.

Do companies pay to be on this list?

No. Rankings come from the published rubric and can't be bought. Developers can pay for a Featured spot above the ranking; it's always marked Sponsored and never changes scores or positions.
