How we rank AI image generators

Every tool was checked on 6–7 October 2026 against its own website, pricing and app-store listings, plus the independent Arena text-to-image leaderboard and 2025–2026 reviews. Each gets five scores out of 10, weighted into an overall score.

Ties are broken by the image quality score. To be listed, a tool has to generate images from text prompts and be usable by anyone, on the web or as an app. The list is open: developers can submit an app, and we review it with the same rubric.

Features are scored half by our editors and half by this published checklist, ticked only where the app's own pages or app-store listing confirm it:

  • Edit an uploaded image with text instructions
  • Reliable text rendering inside images
  • Style or character references, or custom style training
  • Edit selected regions (inpaint, outpaint or expand)
  • Upscaling or 2K+ output
  • Free plan for generating images
  • Commercial use allowed on a paid plan
  • iOS and Android apps
  • Developer API

Rankings are editorial. Companies can't pay to change a score or a position, and any paid placement is labelled Featured.

Quick answers

What is the best AI image generator?

In our October 2026 tests, ChatGPT scored highest overall: OpenAI's GPT Image models top the Arena leaderboard and it's the easiest to use. Gemini, with Google's Nano Banana models, came second and is the best at editing your own photos.

What is the best free AI image generator?

Bing Image Creator is completely free with a Microsoft account. Gemini and ChatGPT both make images on their free plans, and Ideogram, Leonardo.Ai, Krea and Adobe Firefly give you free credits to try them.

Which AI image generator is best for text in images?

ChatGPT's GPT Image models currently render text most reliably, including non-Latin scripts. Ideogram is the specialist choice for logos, posters and thumbnails, and Recraft is best if you need vector (SVG) output.

Is Midjourney free?

No. Midjourney has no free plan or trial; plans start at $10/month. It still has the most artistic look, but it scored lower overall because of price and having only a web app and Discord.

Do companies pay to be on this list?

No. Rankings come from the published rubric and can't be bought. Developers can pay for a Featured spot above the ranking; it's always marked Sponsored and never changes scores or positions.
