How we rank AI personal finance

Every app was checked on 7 October 2026 against its own website, pricing and app-store listings, plus independent 2025–2026 coverage. Each gets five scores out of 10, weighted into an overall score.

Ties are broken by the money insight quality score. To be listed, an app has to link to your bank accounts and use AI or automated analysis to sort, explain or act on your spending, or let AI assistants work with your budget. The list is open: developers can submit an app, and we review it with the same rubric.

Features are scored half by our editors and half by this published checklist, ticked only where the app's own pages or app-store listing confirm it:

  • Ask an AI assistant questions about your money
  • Sorts transactions into categories automatically
  • Links to bank and card accounts automatically
  • Finds and tracks subscriptions and recurring bills
  • Cancels subscriptions or negotiates bills for you
  • Shared budgets for partners or households
  • Tracks net worth and investment balances
  • Works on the web as well as on your phone
  • Free plan available

Rankings are editorial. Companies can't pay to change a score or a position, and any paid placement is labelled Featured.

Quick answers

What is the best AI budgeting app?

In our October 2026 comparison, Monarch scored highest overall, ahead of Rocket Money and Copilot Money. Monarch pairs a mature budgeting app with an AI assistant and household sharing; Rocket Money's Rowan assistant can actually cancel subscriptions and negotiate bills; Copilot has the most polished design but no Android app.

Is there a free AI budgeting app?

Rocket Money, Cleo, Emma and Snoop all have free plans. Rocket Money's AI assistant Rowan needs its $15-a-month Premium+ plan, while Cleo's chat is part of its free tier. Monarch, Copilot, YNAB, Origin and Albert are subscription-only after a trial.

What happened to Mint, and what replaced it?

Intuit shut down Mint in 2024 and pointed users to Credit Karma. Monarch, Copilot Money, Rocket Money and Quicken Simplifi are the apps most former Mint users moved to.

Does YNAB use AI?

Not inside the app. YNAB relies on its own zero-based budgeting method and rules; its ChatGPT app answers general money questions but can't see your budget, and an April 2026 API update makes it easier to connect YNAB to AI assistants. That's why it ranks lower here despite its loyal following.

Are AI budgeting apps safe to link to my bank?

The leading apps use read-only bank connections through aggregators and say they encrypt data and don't sell it, but you are still sharing your full transaction history with a third party. Check each app's privacy policy, and remember AI answers can be wrong: these apps give budgeting help, not regulated financial advice.
