How we rank AI fitness coaches

Every app was checked on 7 October 2026 against its own website, pricing and app-store listings, plus independent 2025–2026 coverage. Each gets five scores out of 10, weighted into an overall score.

Ties are broken by the coaching quality score. To be listed, an app has to use AI or adaptive algorithms to plan, adjust or explain your workouts and training. The list is open: developers can submit an app, and we review it with the same rubric.

Features are scored half by our editors and half by this published checklist, ticked only where the app's own pages or app-store listing confirm it:

  • Plans adapt automatically to your progress or feedback
  • Ask an AI coach questions in chat
  • Strength or gym workout programming
  • Running or cardio training plans
  • Home workouts with no equipment
  • Exercise videos or form guidance
  • Uses sleep, energy or recovery data to guide training
  • Syncs with smartwatches or fitness wearables
  • Free plan with useful features

Rankings are editorial. Companies can't pay to change a score or a position, and any paid placement is labelled Featured.

Quick answers

What is the best AI workout app?

In our October 2026 comparison, Fitbod (for strength training) and Google Health Coach (for all-round fitness and sleep) scored highest, with Runna, the top pick for runners, and Fitify close behind. Freeletics and Planfit are strong, cheaper alternatives for home or gym workouts.

Is there a free AI personal trainer app?

Planfit's core AI plan is free, and Freeletics, Fitify and Strava have free tiers with limited workouts or features. Most full AI coaching, including Google Health Coach, Fitbod and Runna, needs a subscription.

Do I need a wearable for an AI fitness coach?

Not for workout apps like Fitbod, Freeletics, Fitify, Planfit, Zing or Runna, which work from your phone (Runna works best with a running watch). WHOOP Coach and Oura Advisor need their own wearables, and Google Health Coach works best with a Fitbit or Pixel Watch.

Are Future and Ladder AI coaching apps?

No. Future pairs you with a human personal trainer for $199 a month, and Ladder's programs are written by human coaches. Both are well regarded, but they aren't AI-driven, so they aren't ranked here.

Can an AI fitness coach replace a doctor or physiotherapist?

No. These apps give general fitness and wellness guidance and say they are not medical devices. If you have an injury, a health condition or symptoms, talk to a qualified professional before starting a new program.
