Free, ad-free reading and maths app for ages 2–8 with a personalised learning path
Free
Kids' learning apps now listen to a child read aloud, talk back in English practice or adjust each maths question to how the last one went. Some are built around an AI tutor; others use adaptive learning paths and carry the label more lightly. We checked the leading ones and ranked them with the same published rubric, and for each we note the stated age range, ads and in-app purchases, privacy certifications and how open any AI conversation is.

For developers
People compare AI learning apps for kids on this page before they choose. Paste your website after checkout and we'll research, score and publish your listing.
Every app was checked on 24 October 2026 against its own website, pricing, safety and privacy pages and app-store listings. Each gets five scores out of 10, weighted into an overall score.
Ties are broken by the learning quality score. To be listed, an app has to be built for children roughly 3 to 12 and use AI to adapt lessons, tutor, read with or speak with the child, and be available to families today. Homework helpers for teens and students are listed under AI homework helpers instead. The list is open: developers can submit an app, and we review it with the same rubric.
Features are scored half by our editors and half by this published checklist, ticked only where the app's own pages or app-store listing confirm it:
Rankings are editorial. Companies can't pay to change a score or a position, and any paid placement is labelled Featured.

In our October 2026 comparison, Khan Academy Kids scored highest (8.3): it is completely free, ad-free, covers reading and maths for ages 2–8 and follows a personalised path, though its AI is light-touch. Google's Read Along (8.1) and Ello (7.9) came next and are the strongest picks if you want an app that actually listens to your child read.
Ello and Google's Read Along both use speech recognition to follow a child reading aloud and help when they get stuck. Ello adds an adaptive maths tutor and a parent dashboard; Read Along is free, works offline and has stories in nine languages but is only on Android and the web. Buddy.ai listens and talks back too, but it teaches spoken English vocabulary rather than reading.
Check three things: ads and purchases, privacy and how open the AI chat is. Khan Academy Kids and Read Along have no ads or in-app purchases; Ello, Buddy.ai and SplashLearn say they are ad-free but sell subscriptions to parents, and Prodigy sells memberships and in-game items. Buddy.ai's kidSAFE+ COPPA seal and Prodigy's iKeepSafe certification are independent checks; the others name no independent certifier (Khan Academy Kids and SplashLearn describe themselves as COPPA-compliant), and Buddy.ai was found by the CARU watchdog in February 2025 to have broken COPPA rules before fixing its app. Ello publishes an AI safety policy with filters and deletes voice recordings after 30 days, while Buddy.ai offers open-ended conversation without a published guardrail policy.
Khan Academy Kids and Google's Read Along are 100% free with no ads or upsells. Ello and Prodigy have genuinely useful free tiers with paid upgrades, while SplashLearn, Synthesis Tutor and Buddy.ai mostly offer free trials before a subscription.
No. Rankings come from the published rubric and can't be bought. Developers can pay for a Featured spot above the ranking; it's always marked Sponsored and never changes scores or positions.
