How we rank AI language learning

Every app was checked on 7 October 2026 against its own website, app-store listings and prices, plus independent 2025–2026 reviews. Each gets five scores out of 10, weighted into an overall score.

Ties are broken by the learning quality score. To be listed, an app has to teach a foreign language and use AI for conversation practice, feedback or personalised lessons. The list is open: developers can submit an app, and we review it with the same rubric.

Features are scored half by our editors and half by this published checklist, ticked only where the app's own pages or app-store listing confirm it:

  • Spoken, back-and-forth conversation with an AI tutor
  • Real-life roleplay or scenario practice
  • Pronunciation scoring or feedback
  • Corrects and explains grammar or word-choice mistakes
  • Structured course path by level
  • Spaced-repetition vocabulary review
  • Teaches 20+ languages
  • Some AI conversation practice on the free plan
  • Works on the web as well as phones

Rankings are editorial. Companies can't pay to change a score or a position, and any paid placement is labelled Featured.

Quick answers

What is the best AI language-learning app?

In our October 2026 tests, Duolingo scored highest overall thanks to its excellent free plan and AI Video Call on Max. For pure speaking practice, Speak came a close second, with Babbel and Praktika next.

Which app lets you talk to an AI in a foreign language?

Speak, Praktika and Talkpal are built around spoken AI conversation. Duolingo Max (Video Call), Babbel Speak and Busuu Premium Plus add it to their courses, and ELSA Speak offers it for English.

What is the best free AI language app?

Duolingo's free plan is the most complete. Talkpal gives 10 minutes of free AI conversation a day, while Speak, Praktika and Pimsleur offer only free trials.

Is Duolingo Max worth it?

Max ($29.99 a month or $168 a year) adds Video Call and Roleplay, which help intermediate learners in supported languages. Explain My Answer is now free, so beginners get most of the value from the free or Super plans.

Can an AI app make you fluent?

AI apps give unlimited low-pressure speaking practice and instant feedback, but reviewers find their conversations simpler and more predictable than real ones. Most advanced learners pair them with human tutors or native speakers.
