What it is
Buddy.ai is a voice-based AI tutor for ages 3–8: children talk to Buddy the robot, who uses speech recognition to respond, correct pronunciation and play games covering first words, ABCs, numbers, colours and shapes. Its ChiChat mode answers spontaneous questions and tells stories. The app is ad-free and kidSAFE+ COPPA certified, and parents get weekly progress reports.
Latest: In February 2025 BBB National Programs' CARU found Buddy AI had violated COPPA; the company changed its app and website to comply.
What the AI does
- Spoken conversation with an AI tutor using speech recognition
- Pronunciation feedback
- ChiChat open conversation and storytelling
- Learning plan tailored to each child, using their name and conversation history
Pros and cons
- Children practise speaking, not just tapping
- kidSAFE+ COPPA certified, with no ads or microtransactions
- Weekly progress reports for parents
- Very popular: 50M+ Google Play downloads
- Open-ended ChiChat conversation, with no published guardrail policy
- CARU found in February 2025 that it had broken COPPA rules on parental notice and consent; it has since changed its app
- Teaches vocabulary and early concepts rather than reading or maths in depth
How it scores
Genuinely conversational and easy for small children; open AI chat without published guardrails and a past COPPA finding count against it.
