Google will put $15 billion into Malaysia across 2027 and 2028, the company said on Wednesday, for data center campuses, clean energy, water and worker training (Reuters).

That is 7.5 times the $2 billion it pledged there in May 2024 (AP).

The driver is AI demand (Bloomberg), and the plan is big enough to add more than a gigawatt to a national grid. Google’s first Malaysian site, meanwhile, has just switched on.

⚡ What Happened

  • The first site is live. Google’s campus at Elmina Business Park in Selangor is now operational (Reuters).
  • Three more are coming, at Puncak Alam, Serendah and Port Dickson, across Selangor and Negeri Sembilan (SoyaCincau).
  • Power: Google plans to add more than 1 gigawatt of clean energy capacity to Malaysia’s grid, and says it will pay for 100% of the power its campuses use plus the direct cost of connecting them.
  • Water: in Negeri Sembilan, Gamuda will build a reservoir and a treatment plant supplying 65 million litres a day, partly to serve the Port Dickson campus (Lowyat.NET).
  • Skills: four new programs aim to upskill 800,000 Malaysians over five years.

🧠 Why It Matters

The AI race is now fought in concrete, megawatts and litres. Look at what Google chose to announce next to the headline number: it is paying for its own power and funding water supply. Those are the two complaints data centers attract wherever they land, so the promises are doing as much work as the cheque.

The money also serves a business goal. The buildout will support Google’s upcoming cloud region in Malaysia, where AWS and Microsoft already have regions open (Runtime Wire). In cloud, Google is the one catching up here.

Then there are the jobs. Google projects 37,000 local jobs a year during construction and 9,000 a year once the campuses run, with wages averaging 45% above the national median. Treat those as Google’s estimates, not head counts.

🔜 What To Watch

  • The missing numbers. Google has not disclosed megawatt capacity or opening dates for the new campuses.
  • Efficiency claims. Google is targeting a power usage effectiveness of 1.12 to 1.14, against an industry average of 1.54. In plain terms, far less energy lost to cooling and overhead, if it holds up in Malaysia’s heat.
  • The cloud region launch. That is when this spending starts earning.
