More than 30 Google Cloud products are failing in Google’s London data-centre region this morning. Over the same hours, Revolut’s app, card payments and ATM withdrawals have been down for customers across Europe.

Google says the trouble started at 07:08 London time on Tuesday 20 October (Google Cloud status). At its last update the engineers were still investigating, there was no fix, and Google had given no time for one.

If your banking app or a favourite UK website has been acting strange since breakfast, this is the most likely reason. Officially, though, nobody has confirmed the link yet.

⚡ What Happened

Google’s status page lists the problem as “multiple services” in europe-west2, its London cloud region. The affected list reads like a full menu: Compute Engine, Kubernetes Engine, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, Spanner and more.

“Multiple Google Cloud services are experiencing elevated errors and intermittent network failures in europe-west2 region.” — Google Cloud status page

The only workaround Google offers: move your workloads to another zone or region “if feasible”. That’s cold comfort when your whole system lives in London.

According to The Register, the trouble is centred on one of the region’s three zones, europe-west2-b (The Register).

Meanwhile, Revolut’s status page has shown most of its services down or partly down, including card payments and cash machines. Problems have been reported in the UK, Ireland, France and Spain (Reuters via Global Banking & Finance; Finance Magnates). Revolut says customers’ money and data are safe (Irish Times).

A person familiar with the matter told Reuters the Revolut outage is linked to the Google disruption. Neither company has said so on the record. ING Germany also reported login problems, which it blamed on a technical glitch.

🧠 Why It Matters

Revolut has more than 80 million customers, about 13 million of them in the UK. When its cards stop working at the till, that’s a real problem, not just a slow app.

The bigger lesson is concentration. Banks, retailers and delivery firms rent the same few cloud regions. When one has a bad morning, the damage spreads well beyond tech. Down Detector reports also spiked for Lloyds, HSBC, Royal Mail and BT. None of those has been tied to Google, and Lloyds says its app is online.

🔜 What To Watch

  • Google’s next update, which it promised by 12:00 London time, and eventually a root-cause report.
  • Whether Revolut confirms Google as the cause. If it does, expect questions from UK regulators about banks leaning on a single cloud region.
  • How long recovery takes. Long cloud outages tend to end with refunds, credits and some uncomfortable board meetings.

The cause, the number of people affected and the full list of hit companies are still unconfirmed. This story is moving fast.
