How we rank AI transcription apps

Every app was checked on 7 October 2026 against its own website, pricing and app-store listings, plus independent 2025–2026 reviews. Each gets five scores out of 10, weighted into an overall score.

Ties are broken by the transcription accuracy score. To be listed, an app has to turn recordings or audio and video files into text with AI, and anyone has to be able to sign up or download it. The list is open: developers can submit an app, and we review it with the same rubric.

Features are scored half by our editors and half by this published checklist, ticked only where the app's own pages or app-store listing confirm it:

  • Transcribes uploaded audio and video files
  • Records audio in the app or on its own device
  • Labels different speakers
  • Transcribes 50+ languages
  • Can transcribe on your device, without uploading audio
  • Exports subtitles (SRT or VTT)
  • AI summaries or Ask AI about recordings
  • Translates transcripts into other languages
  • Optional human-checked transcripts

Rankings are editorial. Companies can't pay to change a score or a position, and any paid placement is labelled Featured.

Quick answers

What is the best AI transcription app?

In our October 2026 tests, MacWhisper scored highest: it runs Whisper models on your own Mac, costs a one-time fee and has a capable free tier. Happy Scribe, Rev and Plaud came next, with Notta and TurboScribe close behind.

What is the best free transcription app?

TurboScribe's free plan transcribes 3 files a day of up to 30 minutes each, and MacWhisper's free version runs smaller Whisper models on a Mac with no limits. On an iPhone or Mac, Apple's Voice Memos app transcribes recordings for free, though without speaker labels.

Which transcription app works offline?

MacWhisper and Apple Voice Memos both transcribe on your device, so audio never leaves your Mac or iPhone. Most others, including Rev, TurboScribe, Notta, Sonix and Happy Scribe, upload your files to the cloud.

How accurate is AI transcription?

On clear audio the best AI tools get most words right, but accuracy drops with background noise, overlapping speakers, strong accents and jargon. If you need near-perfect text, Rev and Happy Scribe sell human-checked transcripts for about $2 a minute.

Do companies pay to be on this list?

No. Rankings come from the published rubric and can't be bought. Developers can pay for a Featured spot above the ranking; it's always marked Sponsored and never changes scores or positions.
