Open, self-hostable workflow automation with AI agent nodes, code steps and MCP

Automation tools now do more than move data between apps: most let you add AI agents that read, decide and act across your tools. Some are no-code builders for everyone, some are open source and self-hosted, and some are assistants you simply brief in plain English. We tested the leading ones and ranked them with the same published rubric.

For developers
People compare AI automation tools on this page before they choose. Paste your website after checkout and we'll research, score and publish your listing.
Every tool was checked on 7 October 2026 against its own website and pricing page, plus independent 2025–2026 reviews. For this category, the platforms score covers integration breadth and deployment options such as self-hosting. Each gets five scores out of 10, weighted into an overall score.
Ties are broken by the automation power score. To be listed, a tool has to let users build automated workflows or AI agents that take actions across other apps, and be open to new customers. The list is open: developers can submit an app, and we review it with the same rubric.
Features are scored half by our editors and half by this published checklist, ticked only where the app's own pages or app-store listing confirm it:
Rankings are editorial. Companies can't pay to change a score or a position, and any paid placement is labelled Featured.

In our October 2026 tests, n8n scored highest (8.6/10) for its flexible AI agent building and free self-hosting, with Make close behind (8.5) as the best-value visual builder. Zapier (8.3) is the easiest to use and connects the most apps, but costs the most at volume.
For AI agents and complex workflows, yes: n8n is more powerful, can be self-hosted for free and charges per workflow run rather than per step. Zapier is much easier for non-technical users and connects over 9,000 apps against n8n's 500+, so it's the better pick if speed of setup matters most.
n8n's Community Edition and Activepieces are open source and free to self-host. For hosted free plans, Make gives 1,000 credits a month, Activepieces 1,000 credits, and Zapier 100 tasks plus 400 agent activities.
Zapier Agents, Lindy and Google Workspace Studio all build agents from a plain-English description. Lindy works from Slack, iMessage or email, while Workspace Studio is included free with paid Google Workspace plans.
