🚨 Anthropic Just Posted a $17 Billion Quarter — With $895 Billion of Compute Bills Coming
Anthropic's amended IPO filing shows $17B in Q3 revenue, a $567M operating loss and $895.4B of compute and infrastructure commitments.

Anthropic made $17 billion in revenue in three months, then slid back into an operating loss, according to an amended IPO filing lodged with the SEC on Monday morning.
The number that will follow it to the Nasdaq is bigger: $895.4 billion of committed spending, nearly all of it on compute and infrastructure.
Last week’s first filing stopped at June 30. This one adds the third quarter and fills in the compute total the first version left blank.
⚡ What Happened
- Revenue: $16.96 billion, up 47% from $11.56 billion in Q2 and about 12 times the $1.38 billion of a year earlier. The nine-month total is $33.24 billion (S-1/A).
- Operating result: a $567 million loss, after a $974 million profit in Q2. Anthropic points to $5 billion of short-term compute and $2 billion of non-cash charges from its employee donation matching program.
- Net loss: $23.3 billion for the quarter and $104 billion over nine months. About $94.3 billion of that nine-month figure is a paper hit from revaluing convertible notes, derivatives and SAFEs.
- Liquidity: $146.6 billion at September 30, including a $14.8 billion credit line.
🧠 Why It Matters
Growth is still enormous, but it cooled: 47% quarter on quarter, down from about 144% in Q2 (Fortune). Compute and infrastructure costs jumped 77% in the same quarter, from $5.56 billion to $9.86 billion.
The filing explains why demand is getting expensive:
“When customer demand or research needs exceed this long-term capacity, we procure short-term compute that currently costs significantly more than comparable compute procured under our multi-year commitments.” — Anthropic, Form S-1/A
Anthropic also expects to use more of it in the near term, which it says will squeeze margins. Adjusted operating margin already fell from 19% to 15%.
Then there is the long bill. About $69.8 billion falls due in the 12 months after September 30, about $447.5 billion before the end of 2030, and most of the rest between 2031 and 2045. Cash and short-term investments stood at about $132 billion (Yahoo Finance).
One more line for your IPO homework: Anthropic estimates 5% to 7% of nine-month revenue came from customers breaking its usage policy or commercial terms. It tightened enforcement in August and September, and warns that may reduce revenue and growth later.
🔜 What To Watch
The share price range is still blank, so you can’t yet put a valuation on the deal. Anthropic has applied to list on the Nasdaq as “ANT”. Earlier reports pointed to mid-November, which the company has not confirmed. Next up: the price range, and whether Q4 shows the enforcement drag and more of that pricey short-term compute.
