How does tap-to-pay know it's really your card?

Oct 16, 2026 · Explainer · Chips & hardware

Tapping your card doesn't prove anything with the card number. The chip uses a secret key it shares with your bank to turn the amount, the date and a random number into a one-time code, and your bank checks it. Phone wallets such as Apple Pay go further: the phone never sends your real card number.
