How do passkeys work? Signing in with no password, in 60 seconds

Oct 6, 2026 · Explainer · Security & privacy

A passkey lets you sign in with no password. So what is the website checking?

Your device makes two matching keys. The private key stays on your device. The public key goes to the website. To sign in, the website sends a challenge, you unlock with your face, fingerprint or PIN, and your device signs the challenge. The website checks the signature with the public key.

Your face or fingerprint never leaves your device, and a passkey only works with the site that created it, so a fake login page gets nothing.
