  • 10 apps ranked
  • Updated Oct 2026
  • Researched from official sources

AI voices are now hard to tell from real narrators, and the tools range from voiceover studios for training videos to cheap APIs for voice agents. Some let you clone your own voice from a few seconds of audio; others only offer licensed stock voices. We tested the leading ones and ranked them with the same published rubric.

How we rank AI voice generators

Every tool was checked on 7 October 2026 against its own website, pricing and app-store listings, plus the Artificial Analysis Speech Arena blind-listening leaderboard and independent 2026 reviews. Each gets five scores out of 10, weighted into an overall score.

Ties are broken by the voice quality score. To be listed, a tool has to turn text into natural-sounding AI speech that anyone can sign up for, through a web studio, an app or a self-serve API. The list is open: developers can submit an app, and we review it with the same rubric.

Features are scored half by our editors and half by this published checklist, ticked only where the app's own pages or app-store listing confirm it:

  • Self-serve voice cloning from your own sample
  • Library of 500+ voices
  • Speech in 30+ languages
  • Emotion or speaking-style control
  • Pronunciation, pacing or pitch controls
  • Low-latency real-time speech for voice agents
  • AI dubbing or translation of video
  • Narration editor for video or slides
  • API for developers

Rankings are editorial. Companies can't pay to change a score or a position, and any paid placement is labelled Featured.

Quick answers

What is the best AI voice generator?

In our October 2026 tests, ElevenLabs scored highest by a clear margin: its new Eleven v4 models top the Artificial Analysis Speech Arena and it has the widest feature set. Speechify Studio came second, with Fish Audio and Cartesia close behind.

What is the best free AI voice generator?

ElevenLabs' free plan gives 10,000 credits a month and Fish Audio's gives about 7 minutes, but neither free plan is for commercial use. For cheap paid use, ElevenLabs, Cartesia and Typecast all start at around $5 a month.

Is it legal to clone someone's voice with AI?

Only clone your own voice or one you have clear permission to use. Using someone's voice without consent can break privacy, publicity and fraud laws in many places. Descript only lets you clone your own voice, and WellSaid's voices are built with paid voice actors rather than cloned.

What happened to PlayHT and LOVO?

Meta acquired PlayHT (PlayAI) and its team in July 2025, and PlayHT shut down on 31 December 2025. LOVO's website was offline when we checked in October 2026, so neither is ranked here.

Do companies pay to be on this list?

No. Rankings come from the published rubric and can't be bought. Developers can pay for a Featured spot above the ranking; it's always marked Sponsored and never changes scores or positions.
