What it is
LanguageTool checks grammar, spelling, punctuation and style in more than 30 languages and dialects, including English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch and Portuguese. Premium adds unlimited AI paraphrasing, a much larger character limit and thousands of extra style checks. It began as an open-source project in 2003 and was acquired by Learneo in April 2023.
What the AI does
- AI paraphrasing with tone options (formal, concise, fluent, simple)
- Grammar, spelling and punctuation checks in 30+ languages
- Advanced style suggestions and Picky Mode
- Personal dictionary and style guide
Pros and cons
- Strongest multilingual support in the category
- Very cheap on annual billing
- Works in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Pages and email clients
- Open-source core with a privacy focus
- Flags correct technical terms and specialist wording as errors
- AI suggestions are less refined than Grammarly's for English
- No current mobile app listing on the US App Store or Google Play
How it scores
Unmatched for multilingual writers and excellent value; false positives on technical text and lighter AI features cost it on quality.
